"My mum woke up one morning with crippling back and leg pain and Oliver squeezed her in for an appointment at short notice. I'm pleased to say just over a month later, mum is happily walking around again and just in time for our holiday too. Oliver was very professional, kind and compassionate. We can't recommend him enough, thank you so much!"

"I've been treated by Oliver for years for neck, back and calf tension. Very effective treatment. Recommended him to my mum who was also impressed and sees Oliver regularly now. Recently she had a course of acupuncture and was very pleased with the results. Recommended."

"It had been recommended to me to see an Osteopath and was very happy to locate one close by. I’m so glad to have met Oliver who has literally given me my life back by sorting out my back pain in as little as three sessions! I have never felt so much better and have exercises that I can do myself at home. Oliver is a lovely person and always enjoyed our chats during the sessions."

"A visit to Oliver is a regular event in my calendar. I was advised by a fitness instructor that my exercise regime would benefit from a monthly sports massage. Each session Oliver sorts out any particular joint/soreness issues, I am in my 60’s so there are a few, and then I have a sports massage. Oliver is knowledgeable, professional and an extremely nice person. I would, and do, highly recommend him."

What is a sports massage?
A sports massage is a type of massage therapy, typically aimed at individuals who lead athletic lifestyles. It is a therapy that focuses on muscle manipulation, deep tissue massage techniques and stretching. A sports massage can target specific points of injury, prepare the body for a specific physical challenge such as a sports competition, or provide post-event care for tightness and aching muscles after a long workout. Our sports massages are specially designed to suit an individual's needs, whether they are in a specific stage of training or are in injury rehabilitation.
You don’t have to be athletic or even lead an active lifestyle to benefit from a sports massage. The techniques our massage therapists use are designed to reduce the stress from everyday life, using manual therapies to help you decrease tension by increasing mobility, blood flow and overall physical health.
Osteopathy or sports massage?
At Hicks Health Osteopathy Bromley, we are experts at sports massage therapy, but it doesn’t stop there. We also offer acupuncture therapy as well as osteopathic treatment. Our goal is to cater a treatment plan to your specific needs, whether that be a sports massage after a workout or using osteopathy to address underlying musculoskeletal issues. Generally speaking, sports massage is suited to improving fitness performance and aiding with post-event recovery, whereas osteopathy is aimed at improving mobility and function as well as other factors such as lifestyle and overall health. If you are still wondering which treatment is right for you, do not hesitate to call us on 0208 088 0442 for a free 15-minute chat over the phone or in person, where we can help you decide. Alternatively use our quick and easy booking system and make your appointment today.
“You don't need to be an athlete to have a sports massage. A sports massage can benefit anyone with aches and pains. If you are actively involved in sports, a sports massage can help you to perform at your best, recover quicker and stay injury-free. Speak to us if you have any questions about whether a sports massage might be the right choice for you.”

Techniques Used in sports massage
Deep tissue massage
A deep tissue massage aims to alleviate knots and tension deep within the muscles. This usually involves targeted firm pressure to help reduce the tightness sensation that can occur when muscles “knot” or “cramp” following physical exertion.
Myofascial release
The fascia is a type of connective tissue that surrounds our organs, with myofascial tissues connecting and supporting our muscles. Myofascial release therapy is a targeted manual therapy specifically aimed to reduce swelling and tightness that can be present inside these connective tissues. It can be used to increase mobility.
Stretching
Stretching is a common technique used in sports massage. It uses the body’s own movement to reduce tension, increase flexibility and promote a wider range of mobility. Stretches may include individual movements and exercises or assisted movements targeting specific points of tightness or injury.
Injury rehabilitation
We can often push our bodies quite hard. Whether it be at work, at the gym or out for a jog, an injury can happen anywhere. Our massage therapists use techniques to identify areas of pain and discomfort in order to assist the healing process and speed up recovery.
Pre/post event care
Pre-event and post-event refer to tailored sports massage techniques aimed at both before an event and after. Pre-event application involves methods to increase circulation, improve mobility or otherwise help your body to achieve its optimal condition for any given physical activity such as a competition or sporting event. Post-event application is focused more on relieving tension and soreness in the muscles and joints. Typically these methods are aimed at relaxation and recovery.

What’s the first step?
The first thing we will do here at the Bromley Clinic is assess your individual needs and create a plan that suits you. You might have a big sports event coming up and want a specific sports massage routine that caters to your training regime, increasing circulation and preparing your body. Perhaps you have just completed an arduous sports competition or rigorous training program and now you’re in need of some post-event care aimed at reducing soreness and achieving relaxation. Do you work at a desk for extended periods or otherwise wish you could be more physically active? We can tailor a plan to maximise your potential and increase your mobility, giving you a confidence boost and helping to take that next step.
It can be difficult maintaining a healthy balance in day-to-day life. Our therapists are here to help you find that balance through sports massage, regardless of your level of physical activity. We will monitor your progress every step of the way, adapting and optimising your plan to help you achieve your personal fitness goals and reach your potential.
